Persian Mythology

Publisher: Hamlyn,

1973

Ancient Persia offers us a mine of folklore, poetry and myth as rich as its mighty civilisation.

This book, as well as recounting the old 'pagan' myths, examines the mythology of two of the religions or forms of worship which were most important before the great tide of Islam converted the majority to its teachings - Zoroastrianism, and Zurvanism, and explains the beliefs of the cult to which Persia gave birth — Mithraism. It also discusses in a lucid way the role of mythology in the personal faith of the believer, and the part it has played in the history and ritual of the land of the Shahs.

The myth of the early settlers in India and Persia - the Indo-Aryans - reflected their way of life as warriors and nomads.

Loving nature's beauty, but awed by its apparent venom, their gods and demons are either personifications of natural phenomena - Vayu, the winds, Apaosha, the storm — or they are swash-buckling heroes who destroy the monsters who threaten men.

Zoroaster, the great prophet of Persia, knew of the traditional mythology, but adapted it in a more abstract way. The Bounteous Immortals, sons and daughters of God Ahura Mazda, are aspects of God in which man can share if he follows the path of Truth; while the Saviours of the Zoroastrian myths arc thought of as those who overcome evil and spread the Good Religion on earth.

Dualism, the belief in two opposed forces at work in the universe, is a fundamental Zoroastrian doctrine; Zurvanism, an off-shoot or 'heresy', united the forces of good and evil in one ultimate being - Zurvan, Time. Here again we see the old myths adapted to fit a new theme.

The worship of Mithra, one of the most venerated Persian gods, spread as far West as England and as far East as India. He was important in many countries at many different times, and particularly so in the Roman Empire.

In Persia, as in India, Mithra is the god Contract, who preserves Order and Truth, and as such he is still revered by Zoroastrians today.

Discusses the mythology of ancient Persia and of religions which have flourished there, notably Zoroastrianism.

Ancient Persia provides a mine of folk lore and myth as rich as its civilization.

This volume covers a range of Persian myths, and the place of these myths in political, ritual and personal life

Mithras was one of the biggest at the time and the early christians borrowed very heavily from his myths. Mithraism believed in the immortality of the soul, a future judgement, the resurrection of the dead and the second coming of Mithras himself who would then battle and defeat the principles of evil. He was born in a grotto, cave or stable, shepherds attended his birth and brought him gifts. Baptism and communion were important aspects of Mithraism. The Mithraic communion ritual involved these words: "He who shall not eat of my body nor drink
of my blood so that he may be one with me and I with him shall not be saved....
